Research III: Chapter I Part VII: First Diemester II

What I kinda want the logo to look like

With me changing my question to focus and make individual scenes this year instead of the full shorts, I have decided that I would like to take First Diemester into feature territory, the story is overly complicated for the short film format and has more potential than I wanted to explore but which I couldn't in the restrictions of that medium.

As a feature the film will be made up of Five Chapters:

Chapter I
Nowhere to Run To; Baby!

The title card shows up after he asks his GF to marry her upon finding out that she is pregnant. The chapter starts with him finding himself in this undesirable situation and ends when he decides to take action. He finds out that she sabotaged their birth control method to have the child without his knowledge and he and his friend do some research on how to induce a miscarriage within the first few weeks. They make a couple of Plans, Plan A - using vitamins and herbs to induce a natural miscarriage, Plan B - make her go through some intense physical exercise, and finally Plan Z - scramble that embryo.

Chapter II
Herbs, Spice, and Everything Nice

This chapter starts with them putting dangerous vitamins and herbs into the food that he prepares for her, and even trying to add them to things she takes through the day (he often brings her food home), she notices something off and starts taking extra efforts to avoid these specific things. Now that she is keener she also is a bit more of a bitch to him when she finds some of the vitamin supplements and shit - it ends with her giving him some kind of passive threat and he and his friend decide they have to move onto Plan B.

Chapter III
The Bitch Runs

They have to get her to go through some extreme physical exercise and stage a home invasion to get her to run, getting someone else in the plan as well. This chapter sees the planning and execution and in the end, she proves that she is actually very capable of defending herself and fucks up one of them. She makes him feel like shit about not being able to protect her, shames him in front of the family and stuff and now there is police scrutiny. They have a big argument about him not wanting to stay with her, she uses his absentee father against him and at the end threatens to blackmail him. He has to stay and has no choice.

Chapter IV
Plan Z / Deletus Fetus

They go to their last resort and get some more folk on board who despise her, unfortunately, she also has a support group around her and in general, things are much more difficult to pull off now, they make a plan and execute it. It's very tense this part and works the most like a heist movie, his motivations are also a bit more different now, we are with him in wanting revenge and not just to escape the relationship.

Chapter V
Scramble

The plan doesn't work out and things turn into a bloodbath, symbolically representing the complete collapse of the relationship.

I think this can work as a much more layered and entertaining picture, its a new way to do a Heist movie and is interesting in its blend of comedy and drama. I will break these acts down into specific scenes and then choose one really good scene to make as a short this year - like what Damien Chazelle did with Whiplash

Screen Arts III Chapter I Review I: Brawl in Cell Block 99

For ages now I've wanted to watch the movie Brawl in Cell Block 99 , the title sound offputting and looking at the hard copy cover art makes that name seem even more like a shitty grindhouse movie than it did. However the director is what intrigued me so much about the project, he is a writer turned director who makes movies on his own accord, fully auteurist.     These posters are so fucking bad, they do the movie an injustice. I was interested in the movie because of the rave reviews it had gotten and because of his previous debut feature: the western horror Bone Tomahawk . I didn't think an amazing amount of the movie upon first seeing it but have come to see the great parts about it because of the number of YouTubers who sing its praises.  Red Letter Media made a video that cemented the movie as unique and special in my mind, and encouraged me further to check out the directors' other work: Finally, I was pushed over the edge by what I heard abo...

Internship: Chapter I - Southern Smash 2020

On the 1st and 2nd of February, I was approached to film a disc golf competition (Southern Smash 2020) held in Queen's Park for The DGS (Disc Golf South) Facebook Page. Following in the steps of SIT Graduate Matthew Butler, I not only got offered the job through his connections in the disc golf community and his involvement in the competition itself, but I also asked him to show me what he produced for the last year and what kind of settings he used on the FS5 (the camera that I got hired out for the event from SIT Pro). I also had to meet with the leader of the Disc Golf South institute, Jonny Ferrari. I met with him some days before the filming to talk to him about what he wanted with the video: he told me what Matthew did the last year was fine and that I could just do whatever I wanted. The assessment boiled down to just roughly documenting the tournament and editing together a montage of sorts showing the players doing their thing. Southern Smash 2019 Video:  https:/...

Research III: Chapter I Part VI: Theoretical Text I - Alistair Fox & Essay Planning

In Part VI we take a look at Alistair Fox's book Coming of Age Cinema in New Zealand :  Genre, Gender and Adaptation as my first theoretical text. I went to the City Library to look for some books about writing or filmmaking that might be related to my question, I found this one focusing on New Zealand Coming-of-Age Cinema and after reading some of the introduction I thought it would be a good option as one of my theoretical texts (even if what the author is writing on is about a genre which I don't intend to focus on). Unfortunately, I was unable to take out the book as it is a reference copy only, they told me I could scan specific pages of interest but I just snapped some photos with my phone of the sections I found most relevant to my own study. Function of Films Fox focuses on the Coming-of-Age film but he says some very interesting things when discussing the function of these films. When reading I considered the possibility that what he is saying might app...
