Research III Chapter I Part VI: Theoretical Texts

We were looking for theoretical texts in class, things that are not technical guides on how to do what we want this year, but rather opinion pieces observing another artists' work or analyzing ideas rather than the technical execution of something.

Kathryn gave us these links to online film journals to use.

The Alphaville site takes its name from the 1965 film by Jean-Luc Godard, as mentioned in the first journal they posted.

This New-Wave film interested me because it chose to tell a very similar story to mainstream Hollywood at that point - a noir detective story.

It does it in a new way though, that obeys the French New-Wave movement of which it's a part though.

I think this film can very much help with my research as it uses the genre conventions its tied to to still tell a story that fits within the auteur's own ambitions.

This class also gave me some key words that I needed - specifically "film" and "journal".

Because of this I was able to find this article on the cinematic output of one Jean-Luc Godard. Godard was at the forefront of the New Wave movement, and him and his peers are heavily mentioned in my first Theoretical text: Alistair Fox's book Coming of Age Cinema in New Zealand: Genre, Gender and Adaptation

I found this film journal about his work. I will better analyse this later, in class we weren't given much time and had to get out ID cards as well.

She also have us a link to Research Gate:

We also got a sheet which we had to fill out looking at whether or not someone's writing is a trustworthy source - evaluating articles.

I filled that out with my first theoretical text:

Screen Arts III Chapter I Review I: Brawl in Cell Block 99

For ages now I've wanted to watch the movie Brawl in Cell Block 99 , the title sound offputting and looking at the hard copy cover art makes that name seem even more like a shitty grindhouse movie than it did. However the director is what intrigued me so much about the project, he is a writer turned director who makes movies on his own accord, fully auteurist.     These posters are so fucking bad, they do the movie an injustice. I was interested in the movie because of the rave reviews it had gotten and because of his previous debut feature: the western horror Bone Tomahawk . I didn't think an amazing amount of the movie upon first seeing it but have come to see the great parts about it because of the number of YouTubers who sing its praises.  Red Letter Media made a video that cemented the movie as unique and special in my mind, and encouraged me further to check out the directors' other work: Finally, I was pushed over the edge by what I heard abo...

Internship: Chapter I - Southern Smash 2020

On the 1st and 2nd of February, I was approached to film a disc golf competition (Southern Smash 2020) held in Queen's Park for The DGS (Disc Golf South) Facebook Page. Following in the steps of SIT Graduate Matthew Butler, I not only got offered the job through his connections in the disc golf community and his involvement in the competition itself, but I also asked him to show me what he produced for the last year and what kind of settings he used on the FS5 (the camera that I got hired out for the event from SIT Pro). I also had to meet with the leader of the Disc Golf South institute, Jonny Ferrari. I met with him some days before the filming to talk to him about what he wanted with the video: he told me what Matthew did the last year was fine and that I could just do whatever I wanted. The assessment boiled down to just roughly documenting the tournament and editing together a montage of sorts showing the players doing their thing. Southern Smash 2019 Video:  https:/...

Research III: Chapter I Part VI: Theoretical Text I - Alistair Fox & Essay Planning

In Part VI we take a look at Alistair Fox's book Coming of Age Cinema in New Zealand :  Genre, Gender and Adaptation as my first theoretical text. I went to the City Library to look for some books about writing or filmmaking that might be related to my question, I found this one focusing on New Zealand Coming-of-Age Cinema and after reading some of the introduction I thought it would be a good option as one of my theoretical texts (even if what the author is writing on is about a genre which I don't intend to focus on). Unfortunately, I was unable to take out the book as it is a reference copy only, they told me I could scan specific pages of interest but I just snapped some photos with my phone of the sections I found most relevant to my own study. Function of Films Fox focuses on the Coming-of-Age film but he says some very interesting things when discussing the function of these films. When reading I considered the possibility that what he is saying might app...
